This ‘guide’ is originally meant to be a reference but it includes comments and thoughts about the meta and BiS gear. It includes a mini guide for newer players and core skill and gear builds. The article might be wordy but I assure you the information is worth it.

This guide covers everything in the current NA/EU version of BDO but I will mention newer content from KR. Players from other servers should still find this information relevant.

Rangers are:

  • Ranged/Melee Assassin
  • Pre Awakening: Ranged, Vulnerable, Snipe, Kite, No Cooldowns
  • Awakening: Melee, Defensive, Burst, Cooldowns
  • Mid tier PvE. Requires managing Mana and Stamina
  • “Hardmode”. Higher skill ceiling compared to most popular classes

Rangers are NOT:

  • Tanks
  • Support – No skills that benefit party members
  • Control – No AOE CC

FAQ

How do I combo?

See Skill Breakdown for skills and their uses (including PW Kiss cancel).

What are “Absolute” skills?

JIN (진) literally means “Absolute” in Korean. Also known as “Absolute
or “Second Awakening”. These are essentially upgraded versions of our existing bow skills. Damages values are up to 5x stronger than normal versions.

What are “Awakening” skills?

Awakening skills are the Kamasylven sword skills we get after doing a quest at level 56. They make up the other half of our skill set and are extremely useful giving us a dash and several frontal guards and superarmors.

Do rangers still have mana/stamina problems?

Yes and No. Our mana problems have been fixed over several patches with mana cost and gain improved on several skills. If you spam Will of the Wind, Blasting Gust, and Waltz, you will still easily run out of mana or stamina. If you manage your cooldowns and rotate a variety of skills, it is entirely possible to grind without mana potions. If you are having problems, here is a list of things you can do (in order):

  • Wailing Wind, Regen, and Elven Rage often
  • Waltz of Wind Add-On: Instantly Recovers 3 MP/WP/SP per hit
  • Wailing Wind Add-On: Instantly Recovers 10 MP/WP/SP per hit
  • Magic Crystal of Infinity – Extraction x2 on your weapon

What are ranger’s PvE rotations?

Level 1-40: Evasive Explosive Shot + LMB (aka “Umbrella”)

Level 41-55: WotW or Shotgun spam (See “Evasive Shot Cancels”)

Level 56+ (Post-Awakening):

  • Ranged:
    • Absolute: Will of the Wind (58) spam (high mana cost)
    • Shotgun spam
    • Flow: Kiss of the Wind, Absolute: Penetrating Wind (58), and Evasive Shot if you can instantly kill packs of mobs
  • Melee:
    • Waltz spam. Additional gap close with Breezy Blade and Rushing Wind
    • Rotate awakening skills off-cooldown: Nature’s Tremble, Wailing Wind + Flow, Elven Rage + Flow, Regeneration, Vine Knot

How much accuracy do I need for PvP?

About 350 accuracy. Actually, let’s not worry about numbers.

Pre-softcap, use a Steel Dagger. If you want to PvP, swap to Bronze Dagger.

Near-softcap, you should have enough accuracy with 2x Precisions, 2x JIN Vipers, TET Bhegs, and TET Kzarka. If an opponent is stacking evasion and you need more accuracy, just swap to a bronze dagger.

How much accuracy do I need for PvE?

Don’t worry about accuracy for PvE.

Stats

  • Damage Type – All ranger skills are Ranged, including sword skills.
  • Levels Unlock skills ranks which significantly increases your damage. Levels differences seems to affect CC success chances which is essential in PvP.
  • AP is the go-to stat for damage.
    • You get bonus AP based on your sheet AP (tl;dr sheet AP becomes more effective after 236 AP)
  • Extra Damage to _____ is equivalent to AP but specifically applies to certain types of targets (human, species, monster) and is not included with sheet AP.
  • Accuracy. This stat is essential in PvP and not so much in PvE. The rise of DR meta has made this stat less important; 2x JIN Vipers, 2x Precisions, Kzarka, and Bhegs should be enough against most opponents (around 350 accuracy). If you don’t have those items, I suggest using a bronze dagger or red coral earring).
  • DP is a combination of damage reduction and evasion.
    • Damage Reduction – Flat damage reduced from attacks. DR builds are the current goto for rangers.
    • Evasion – Evasion allows us to dodge attacks which significantly mitigates the damage we take. Evasion builds works on ranger but is not as efficient as DR.
  • Attack Speed – Improves the delay in between attacks allowing for faster transitions and reactions. Max this!

(0%, 5%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 20%)

  • Critical Hit Rate – A self explanatory stat. Each crit % is 1% more overall damage as long as it isn’t higher than 100%.

(0%, 5%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 20%)

  • Movement Speed – Increases walking/sprinting speed. Slightly improves the distance on windstep (dash).

(0%, 5%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 20%)

  • Casting Speed – does not affect ranger skills (except Tearing Arrow). Not important.
  • CC Resistance – Being higher level than your opponent will improve CC resistances against them. 2x Adamantines, Nouver Dagger, and Foods should let you max KD resistance which will be useful when grinding in dangerous areas.
  • CC Chaining

Refer to the following chart to see how CC flows. The longest CC combo we will be able to pull off is a combination of the following:

1 Stiff → 2 Knockdown/Stun → Downsmash (30%) from Regen/PW Spam

New Players

This section is based on how I would approach the game as a new player.

New or Returning Players

  • If you are a new or returning player, stay on Olvia channels
  • Use the BDO Failstack Sheet as an enhancing reference.

Essentials

Black Spirit Quests – Follow your Black Spirit Quests. They should lead you to relevant grind spots, provide blackstone, inventory slots, basic weapons, armors, and accessories.

Save up your initial loyalties (14,000 total) on 4 Weight Limit Increase (+50LT each).

Press ‘o’ -> “suggested” for a full list of inventory expansion quests.

Once you hit level 50, don’t neglect your daily and weekly boss scroll.

Make sure to choose the awakened scroll piece which don’t expire and has a higher chance of boss drop. Prioritize Dastard Bheg (Daily) and Dim Tree Spirit (Weekly).

Tip: Save scrolls on an alt and do the awakened boss with a party!

Knowledge Battle with Haley (Level 50) for a Magic Crystal of Infinity – Experience (Combat EXP +10% on Helmet). Bring lots of energy! (Cheatsheet)

Roaring Magical Armor. Accept ‘Magic Armor Exchange I‘ from the Black Spirit at level 50 and get the 4th upgrade. Equivalent to a PRI green armor. Eventually replace this with a TRI green armor or better.

Awakening quest (level 56) – Talk to the Black Spirit upon hitting level 56 to start the quest to obtain your awakening skills. Don’t forget to grab your free Skill Reset!

The Black Spirit Quests of Mediah, Valencia, Kamasylve, and Dreighan give lots of contribution exp and decent accessories. BiS offhand crystals awaits you at the end of each region’s questline.

General’s accessories are about as strong as TRI yellow accessories for PvE only (Only one per account). The General’s accessory questline can be done starting level 53 and finished level 58, you will be able to upgrade it to PEN (no failstacks required). Be prepared for a long kill quest!

Complete the Valencia Main Questline to receive unlock a quest for a an 11 AP Ring. See the guide by Loriel on the forums for more details.

Cliff’s Weapon Boxes are obtained through three separate quests in Western Guard Camp. They contained a +15 weapon slightly weaker than a Liverto and can be upgraded up to TET. They can be turned in to an NPC at PRI, DUO, TRI, and TET for a fair amount of silver. I personally this is worth getting to TRI before turning it in. These are currently available as an event in NA/EU.

Add-Ons

Full List of Ranger Add-ons

Non-Bolded Addons are preference. It is up to you to choose between the non-bolded choices.

DoT Ranged

Inspired by Seol’s ranged add-ons. This DoT setup fits perfectly with the Kiss combo, effectively adding an extra 135 true damage to the combo.

  • Blasting Gust
    • Inflicts 45 Pain Damage per 3 sec for 12 sec. for target
    • PVP Attack +5 for 5 sec. for self
  • Penetrating Wind

Gear Roadmap

Before delving into specific options in the sections below, here is a quick roadmap you can follow if you want a general idea of what to build.

Base Green

This should be your goal by the time you tackle Mediah and your awakening quest at level 56. Rosar is most cost efficient of the green longbows. Krea is a fine alternative for 1 less AP. Steel dagger will be your main offhand for grinding. Roaring armor received at level 56 through this questline. Heve (HP) is a fine alternative over Grunil (AP). Use whatever you can for AP accessories, they will be replaced soon.

Asula Accessories – 148/144 AP

Asula is the next goal. You don’t necessarily need the full set and some of the pieces are skippable. Although they are useful, you still want to replace these with PRI Blue accessories ASAP. If you choose to do the Mediah questline, you will also get failstacks which should be enough to get your gear to PRI or higher. Use them to your advantage! (failstack sheet). You should start using some of the cheaper crystals.

TRI Ultimate + Asula (Steel) – 180/176 AP

The next item on the agenda is to get all your weapons and armor

s to TRI Ultimate. 180 AP should be enough to solo grind Sausans and Pirates efficiently.

TRI Boss and DUO Blue Accessories (Bronze) – 181/183 AP

icon
icon
icon

At this point, you should have started your long search for full boss (Night vendor, world bosses). Kzarka, Dandelion, Bhegs, and Urugons should be your priority. Kutum for PvE, Bronze for PvP. DUO/TRI blue accessories should be a reasonable goal. With this setup, you should be to kill similarly geared players in one combo.

Accuracy Minimum – 206/208 AP, 330 Accuracy

icon
icon

Offhands other than Bronze (Nouver in this example) are worth using in PvP once you reach around 350 accuracy (excluding offhand, including crystals; 330 in this example). To meet this requirement, you need at least a Kzarka, Bhegs, 2x Precisions, and 2x JIN Vipers.

Softcap (Nouver) – 251/253 AP, 344 Accuracy

Softcap is full TET armor/weapons and TRI yellow accessories.

Softcap (Offin) – 254/253 AP, 326 Accuracy

Offin is worth picking up at softcap when you are able to take advantage of bonus AP. You will gain marginal improvements in damage.

  • Strength of Heve and Grunil are common armor drops. They provide the same DP but different set effects. Heve gives HP while Grunil gives AP. It doesn’t matter which you choose since you will replace it with Boss 2/2.
  • Boss gear is your Best in Slot (BiS) armor that ALL classes can equip.
    • Griffon’s Helmet (damage reduction) is practically the same as Giath’s Helmet (HP).
    • Dim Tree Spirit’s Armor (HP) much better than Red Nose’s Armor (hp regen)
    • Bheg’s Gloves (accuracy) is way more useful than Leebur’s Gloves (evasion)
    • Urugon’s Shoes (damage reduction) is noticeably than Muskan’s Shoes (evasion)

Crafted Costumes

  1. For 1,500 pearls, you can transform one of the below craftable ‘costumes’ into an actual costume that fits in your costume slot.
  2. Heating the craftable costumes net’s you a special socketable costume crystal.

Crystals

Budget Grind and Weight Limit

These crystals focus on enhancing your grinding experience. Glove should be adjusted to max your 1. attack speed and 2. critical hit. Ideally you want experience crystals in your helmet but given the limited supply, ancient harphia is probably the next best budget option. Extraction on offhand is great for mana while grinding but can be swapped with absorption if you need more health. Your armor and shoes are the most expensive and focus on maximizing your weight limit.

BiS (Dreighan Patch)

/

BON Cobelinus in armor is a fine alternative if you want to stack HP. Critical in offhand is potentially BiS damage but only marginally. Main decision here is the choice between four Hoom or Macalod in helmet and shoes. It comes down to choosing between damage or tankiness. Alternative configurations involve putting them Hooms in offhand or armor.

Glass Cannon CC Ignore and Resist

In this AP meta where a single CC usually means a kill or death, it starts to make a lot of sense to trade tankiness for CC success. Here, we maximize resistances and ignore KD resistance for 10 AP, 10 DR, and 550 HP. It is a steep trade off but worked well in the pre-Dreighan meta.
